Highlights

South Africa's battlefields

Spend three days learning about the monumental Zulu War – a must for history enthusiasts. Listen to insightful lectures while you stand on the legendary battlefields of Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift. A specialist guide, a masterful storyteller, will bring history alive as you hike to poignant landmarks. The landscapes alone are haunting as are the memorials that commemorate this remarkable military past.

Dinner with a view

Arrive at your lodge overlooking the great battlefields of South Africa’s past, Isandlawa and Rorke’s Drift. You may have seen its history immortalised in the film, Zulu, but nothing beats the real-time drama of these wide-open plains and flat-topped koppies. Settle down to lunch with views over the Buffalo River Gorge where you can conjure images of the mass of Zulus fording the river. Take the afternoon to relax. In the evening, gather around the fire for cocktails and canapés before a welcome dinner.

Explore Isandlwana battlefield

Wake up early to visit Isandlwana, where, in 1879, the Zulu King, Cetshway, and his 20,000 warriors obliterated a British regiment of under 2,000. On the way to the site, you can listen to an audio by David Rattray, South Africa’s beloved storyteller, narrating the history of the Ango-Zulu War. Stop at the museum for an overview and then it’s onto the battlefield for a vivid lecture. After lunch, take a walk to Isandlwana’s strategic look-out points and the final resting places of two important lieutenants.

Roaming Rorke’s Drift

After breakfast, stretch your legs on a walking trail out on the reserve, keeping an eye out for game such as giraffe, zebra and perhaps the elusive kudu. This afternoon, you’ll visit Rorke’s Drift where around 4,000 Zulus swept down upon a garrison of 150 British soldiers who successfully defended the post for 10 hours. It was a valiant effort that gained them eleven Victoria Crosses. You have time to pop into the museum before an evocative narrative by your specialist guide bringing the history to life.

Farewell to history

After a leisurely wake up and breakfast, guests are free to spend their morning in the museum or library, enjoying the view and collection of books before departing.
