The Big Five
The lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo make up the Big Five – the superstars of the safari world. You’ll find them at the top of the list for safari-goers, too, as well as emblazoned on the South African rand.
There are many destinations across the continent where you can spot all five in one fell swoop, from Kruger National Park in South Africa to the Masai Mara in Kenya. Game drives give you the best chance of seeing these wild animals in their natural habitat, alongside the likes of giraffe, cheetah, zebra and antelope. Whilst it’s possible to see the Big Five year-round, the best time is during the dry season when wildlife gathers around watering holes, and sparse foliage offers unimpeded views.
