Perched above the seasonal Hoarusib River, Okahirongo Elephant Lodge lies deep in the northwest Namibian wilderness. Getting here is part of the adventure – vast desert surrounds the lodge and you can travel for miles without seeing another vehicle. The only neighbours are the local Himba, who live on the other side of the river; many are family members of lodge guides.
Elephant Lodge is within the Purros Conservancy – the area is one of the only places in the world where elephants and giraffe have adapted to the desert landscape. Wildlife tracking and guided walks are on offer, as well as nature drives across river beds and rocky peaks, and end-of-day G&Ts as the sun sets behind towering desert dunes. The remote location also means dark starry skies for excellent stargazing.
The lodge design includes shapes, colours and materials that reflect the local environment: a dome-like Himba entrance, focal fireplace and traditional boma. In keeping with the natural approach, Okahirongo runs on 100% solar power.
The seven chalets feature local art and a private gazebo where you enjoy wide-open desert views. Each chalet has a private bathroom with indoor and outdoor showers. Dinner is a fusion of Namibian and Italian food, served in the elegant dining room. Don’t miss the delicious homemade gelato. Another lodge feature is the central pool, where you can cool off after days spent exploring.
