Relax in thermal waters, admire ornate architecture and delve into Budapest’s rich history
Hungary is home to a beguiling mix of grand boulevards, impressive palaces, historic spas and vibrant cafes. It’s perhaps the country’s millennia-long history that makes Hungary holidays so special. There’s wonderful art, architecture, food and music to explore.
A highlight of your holiday in Hungary is guaranteed to be a trip to Budapest. Split in two by the river Danube, the best way to appreciate the city is from the water. On one side of the river you’ll see Buda. With its towering royal palace and ornate Matthias Church, it’s one of the most recognisable parts of the city. On the opposite bank is Pest. Criss-crossed by wide boulevards and elegant squares, it’s home to the imposing Gothic Revival parliament building and many of the city’s best bars and restaurants.
Budapest has a vibrant contemporary culture too. Visitors and locals alike flock to the city’s beautiful thermal spas while its nightlife is among the best in Europe.
Outside Budapest, explore the pastel-hued facades in the artists' hotspot of Szentendre. The city of Esztergom will be another fascinating stop on your Hungarian holiday. Its elegant architecture reflects the important part the city played in the founding of Hungary. The city’s vast basilica is Hungary's largest church, while its museum, Keresztény, hosts the biggest ecclesiastical collection in the country. Below the castle, Esztergom’s Watertown neighbourhood is home to numerous thermal baths. They’re the perfect remedy for relaxing after a day of sightseeing.
