Wildlife watching from a private wooden safari deck under the shade of a Jackalberry tree is just one of the highlights for guests at MalaMala Camp.
Hugging the border of South Africa’s famed Kruger National Park, this boutique lodge lies along the banks of the Sand River and overlooks the bushveld, beyond which is home to the Big Five.
While MalaMala was the original camp on this vast private reserve, it has recently been reimagined and while retaining its authenticity now has a contemporary edge. In the Buffalo Bar you will find old maps and historic images of the early days alongside more modern works of wildlife art.
Each suite or room has a private deck or veranda overlooking the river or a waterhole and all have en-suite bathrooms. Convenient family rooms are available, but it is worth noting children under five are only allowed on pre-booked private safari drives.
During your stay at MalaMala you can join a photographic ranger on board a specially adapted vehicle. The bucket seats sliding cushioned camera rail provide everything you need for that picture-perfect moment when you see a leopard or lion.
Back at base you can relax in the infinity pool, work out in the gym, enjoy a massage, or curl up with a book in the air-conditioned library, known locally as the ‘Monkey Club’.
