Experience the thrill of a big game safari at Madikwe and Waterberg
The two South African nature reserves of Madikwe and Waterberg are ideal safari locations for anyone looking to tick off sightings of the Big Five from their bucket list. Lion, elephant, Cape buffalo, leopard and rhinoceros are all regularly tracked down by our experienced guides, and you’ll be seeing a host of other creatures on your safari tour too.
Madikwe Game Reserve is one of South Africa’s largest reserves, covering 750km2. This reserve, on the border with Botswana, has a story behind it that is almost as jaw-dropping as the creatures within it. In 1992, under the codename Operation Phoenix, entire breeding herds of elephant, Cape buffalo, south-central black rhino and southern white rhino along with various species of antelope, were relocated to what had been a rather unproductive, vast area of farmland. Today it’s home to 66 large mammals and about 300 bird species.
Waterberg is one of South Africa’s best kept secrets. Its rugged beauty is synonymous with ecotourism and conservation, with plenty of locations within the 1,500km2 habitats to find interesting wildlife in their natural homes.
Both reserves are ideal for family safaris, being malaria free and with child-friendly accommodation available. We tailor all our safaris to your interests and, for families with children, we can ensure that we add educational depth to the fun of seeing nature close-up.
