Bustling cities and remote mountain retreats
Java is the beating heart of the Indonesian archipelago, home to 140 million people and Indonesia’s capital Jakarta, with its National Museum and Dutch colonial buildings. Take a tailor-made Java holiday with us and you can decide just how much buzzing cityscape you want, and how much of its hard-to-reach interior, volcanoes, crater lakes and twisting mountain passes you’d like to explore.
Java is home to some ancient monuments, such as the world’s largest Buddhist temple at Borobudur, which is a listed UNESCO World Heritage Site and beautiful Penataran, the island’s largest Hindu temple.
Java’s cultural and creative hub, Yogyakarta, is a great place to shop for handmade batiks or to listen to traditional music, called gamelan. On the outskirts of the city, we can take you to Prambanan, another Hindu temple and one of the island’s most important archaeological sites.
Java is a year-round destination, but particularly pleasant from June through to the end of September.
