Ancient Thai culture and architecture
The ornate settlement of Ayutthaya was once the capital of ancient Thailand. Founded in 1350, it remained the capital for over 400 years. During its heyday, beautiful temples, palaces and monuments were built in the city, many of which can still be seen on a tour of Ayutthaya. It’s easy to reach by water or by road on a day trip from Bangkok.
Once the most magnificent city in the Orient, Ayutthaya is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. During its 417-year history, Ayutthaya was the capital for 33 kings and five dynasties. Though it was sacked and looted by the Burmese in the 18th century, many of its most impressive temples survive to this day as a testament to its glorious past.
As the city is set on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, an Ayutthaya cruise is a great way to see its sights and appreciate the scale of the former capital. Travel to the city on a traditional rice barge from Bangkok for an unforgettable Thai experience.
