Find your perfect wine in Barossa Valley
North of Adelaide, you will come across many names you recognise from back home. Penfolds, Wolf Blass, Jacob’s Creek – this is their domain. And it is a large one. With more than 150 wineries and around 80 cellar doors, this is South Australia’s most famous wine region where the vintages are consistent and excellent. It’s well worth stepping away from the familiar though and looking out for wineries you may not yet have discovered but probably won’t want to leave. Seppeltsfield Wines is one of the country’s oldest and it offers a unique experience. Here, just as HRH Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall did when they visited, you can taste a tawny fortified vintage from the year you were born, straight out of the barrel. This is the only place in the world where you can do this, or choose a wine to taste that was made at an important historical moment.
Many of these wonderful vineyards also offer fine dining and it’s worth booking in advance to make sure you get a table at the one you want. That said, most produce excellent gastronomic and heritage fare, from local produce and accompanied by the very best local wines.
Choose how to travel the region – whether it’s by hot air balloon or a cycle ride from winery to winery. What’s for sure is that this is not the place for a self-drive break. Save that for another day.
