The first part of your awe-inspiring journey along the world-famous Routeburn Track takes you through splendid scenery as you follow the shoreline of Lake Wakatipu. Take short photography breaks as your gradual ascent reveals impressive vistas over snow-capped peaks, alpine farmland and shimmering waters. Your hike takes you through the heart of Mount Aspiring National Park and as you walk you will learn all about the Maori history in the area from your guide.
The next part of the track is an enchanting flatland with towering mountains on either side. This is where you will enjoy your picnic and a little time to soak in the dramatic views. Then take one of the old trails used by Maori travellers through a peaceful woodland where ferns and mosses play much more important roles in the ecosystem than elsewhere in the world. This is also an excellent spot for observing some of New Zealand’s iconic bird species.
