Discover one of Greece’s best kept secrets
With its spectacular beaches and crystalline sea, the Halkidiki peninsula is the stuff of Grecian daydreams. With the area still relatively unknown and deliciously unspoilt, a Halkidiki holiday offers a taste of Greece’s true rural identity, and may well just be one of the country’s best kept secrets.
Offering some of the best scenery in Greece, Halkidiki is in fact a trident of forested peninsulas: Kassandra, Sithonia and Athos. Collectively, they combine to form 500km of coastline, with no fewer than 40 Blue-Flag beaches, numerous archaeological sites and hosts of sleepy little fishing villages. While individually, they all offer something a little bit different. Of the three, Kassandra, is the most popular. With its white-sand beaches and pine headlands, it offers a wide range of hotels, tavernas and bars. Mount Athos is a World-Heritage site and home to over 40 monasteries that are only open for day trips. And rugged Sithonia is considered to be the most beautiful of the three, with its unspoilt fishing villages and dense, pine-forested interior. Here, you can hire a boat and explore romantic coves, or spend lazy days on deserted beaches before strolling down to the waterfront to feast on the catch-of-the-day as the sun sets.
With the region still enjoying a degree of anonymity, there’s never been a better time to visit. Take a Halkidiki holiday with us and we’ll give you a taste of the real Greece, at its offbeat, scenic best.
