Descend into the heart of an Icelandic volcano. This is the only place in the world you can travel by lift through the crater into the breath-taking magma chamber. Remarkably, after its last eruption 4,000 years ago, Thrihnukagigur did not collapse. This means that today you can effortlessly travel to the bottom of its crater in an open cable elevator. On arrival you’ll find a geologic spectacle preserved within the magnificent magma chamber 120 metres below Earth.
This intact, dormant volcano is only located a 30-minute drive from the capital, Reykjavík. You’ll be driven from your hotel to start your trek across the lava fields of Bláfjöll Country Park to the welcome centre of the volcano. Good hiking boots and layers of warm clothes will be required for the 40-minute walk which is led by your expert mountain guide. On arrival you will put on safety gear including helmet and harness, and receive a safety briefing.
You’re then ready for the slow descent in the cage-like lift which was custom-built to fit into the opening and carries six to seven people. Controlling the number of people in the chamber gives you the gift of silence and space as you see the beautifully-lit chamber for the first time. Your voyage will reveal a kaleidoscope of colours in the molten rock which once exploded towards the surface before falling back down to be frozen in time. A truly magical experience you’ll never forget.
