Highlights

Explore Iceland’s Diamond Circle

Explore the sparkling gems deep within Iceland’s Diamond Circle. This lesser-known region is not only home to Europe’s most powerful waterfall, but also glittering lakes, bubbling hot springs and volcanic craters. From the north’s unofficial capital, Akureyri, visit the whale-watching village of Húsavík and lava fields of the unearthly blue and green landscapes of Lake Mývatn. During this four-night tailor-made adventure view Krafla’s vast caldera and immerse yourself in natural wonders familiar to some of you from Game of Thrones. Why not extend your stay to see the Northern Lights from a geothermal pool at a retreat in the beautiful Fljot Valley?

UK - Akureyri, Iceland

On arrival at Akureyri airport you will be met and transferred to Hotel Kea for two nights. During the journey enjoy your first taste of Iceland. The town, known as the ‘capital of North Iceland’ boasts botanical gardens and has myriad of museums, art galleries and exhibitions.

Diamond Circle

Today, you will discover the wonders of the Diamond Circle and see its waterfalls, moon-like landscapes, and hot springs. During your guided tour explore picturesque Godafoss waterfall and the unearthly blue and green landscapes of Lake Mývatn, known for its birdlife and dark lave pillars. The awesome Dettifoss waterfall cascades into Jökulsárgljúfur canyon and is the most powerful waterfall in Europe. You will stop off at the fishing village of Húsavík famous for its whale watching due to the feeding conditions of Skjálfandi bay.

Askja and Holuhraun

As you continue your odyssey around the northern shores of Iceland you will experience some of the best photographic sights today. Join your driver guide to follow the Skjalfandafljot river, home to many waterfalls including the secret gem of Hrafnabjargarfoss and Aldeyarfoss. Black basalt columns provide a stark contrast against the thrashing white foaming water. From here you will head to Bardardalur, a valley named after the Viking Bardur, and Lake Mývatn where you will stay at Hótel Laxá for two nights.

Myvatn and Akureyri

Today, you will explore the glittering Lake Mývatn, one of the Diamond Circle’s most beloved attractions, with its lush surrounding wetlands, an abundance of birdlife, and the dark lava pillars that characterise the nearby landscape. Fans of Game of Thrones may recognise Dimmuborgir (known as ‘The Dark Fortress’) from the show. You will also view Krafla, a 10km caldera with crater lake and head south to Namaskard with its steaming fumaroles and boiling mud pools.

Akureyri, Iceland - UK

Today depart Iceland for your flight home. If you would like to extend your stay to see the Northern Lights from a geothermal pool you can stay at Deplar Farm. This stunning retreat hotel lies in the beautiful Fljot Valley. Guided activities include hiking, snowshoeing, ice fishing, snow sledding, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, horse riding and group whale watching.
