Why we like it
- Feel like you are stepping back in time, with characterful cave walls, a Benedictine greeting and little outward evidence that this is a hotel
- Join a cooking class to discover delicious dishes of the region
- Feel guilt-free thanks to the property’s ecofriendly reinvention from cave to hotel
- Children will love sleeping in the caves and the hotel can arrange babysitting if required
About Sextantio Le Grotto Della Civita
Sextantio Le Grotto Della Civita is set within the oldest part of Sassi, looking out to rock-hewn churches and the surrounding gorge. Choose from 18 rooms, each of which is formed from the ancient caves that have made the city of Matera world-famous. The uneven stone floors and gnarled limestone walls have been preserved, instilling the space with a sense of history. Slip under handmade linen into a large comfortable bed, while candlelight sends shadows dancing across the room. There’s no minibar or TV to spoil the atmosphere – this is an escape from the stresses of modernity, after all.
With that in mind, treat yourself to a massage during your stay, without having to leave the privacy of your room. Unwind to soothing music and flickering candles as you do.
The ancient church on-site has been transformed into a dining area. Enjoy pre-dinner drinks in the breakfast room, then sample the food of the Basilicata region, served in the church’s deconsecrated chamber.
