Escape to the peace and tranquillity of the beautifully manicured gardens of Vatican City. Covering more than half of the world’s smallest country you’ll discover a cool green space rich with flower beds and dotted with fountains, sculptures and grottoes. This is a welcome retreat to the crowded streets of Rome.
A serene haven for incumbent popes’ since the Middle Ages, the Vatican Gardens cover 23 hectares with meandering pathways, grottoes and fountains as well as a gorgeous Italian garden, bedecked with colourful flowers. Stroll around with your knowledgeable guide admiring highlights like the Our Lady of Lourdes grotto, known as a favourite prayer spot of Pope Francis, while learning about the gardens history. Dating back to the 13th century, the site started as a simple fruit orchard but was extended to a more the exquisite sight we see today.
After the tour you’re free to explore the Vatican museums, chapels and galleries which, or course, includes Michelangelo's frescoed ceiling, which famously adorns the Sistine Chapel. Take time to view St Peter’s Basilica. Beneath this iconic dome you’ll discover a spectacular interior including some of Italy's most celebrated masterpieces: Michelangelo’s Pietà and Bernini’s baldachin over the papal altar. Don’t forget to touch the right foot of the bronze statue of St Peter before leaving.
