The vibrant city of Palermo, which can appear chaotic by day, is perhaps best appreciated at night. As the sun sets over the Tyrrhenian Sea, you can set off on a tour around the monuments and illuminated landmarks of Sicily’s calmer capital with A&K’s knowledgeable guide and driver.
You will be transported from your hotel to the meeting point in the Kalsa district. This medieval area of Palermo is now known for its summer evening arts festival. You guide will lead you to the ruins of Santa Maria dello Spasimo where you watch the sun set over the beautiful Monte Pellegrino and out towards the ocean. From here you will experience the city’s spectacularly illuminated sights from the Arabesque domes of San Giovanni degli Ermiti out to the impressive glass mosaics which cover the interior of the cathedral of Monreale considered the finest Norman architecture in Sicily.
Venture west of the city to view the former summer residence of Norman Kings, Zisa castle which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can see how Zisa was inspired by Moorish architecture with the name coming from the Arab term al-Azīz, meaning “splendid”. Judge for yourself. Before retiring to your hotel, you’ll stop at the former royal palace, La Cuba, with a grand structure that certainly lives up to its name.
