Explore the fascinating Valley of the Temples, the jewel of south-western Sicily with your local guide. Situated only three kilometres below the modern city of Agrigento, this vast UNESCO World Heritage site is one of the most enthralling and largest archaeological areas in the world, boasting the best-preserved Doric temples outside Greece within its 1,300-hectare landscape park.
Accompanied by your guide, marvel at the impressive remains of five Doric temples at this handsomely-preserved 5th century BC site. The site includes the 2,000-year-old Temple of Concord, one of the best preserved Greek temples found anywhere in the world. Observe how it has remained entirely intact since it was constructed in 430 BC and find out why.
You also visit the Archaeological Museum, (closed on Sundays) with its display of objects that range from prehistoric times to the early Christian period. Your guide will point out the dazzling displays of Greek painted ceramics and the awe-inspiring reconstructed telamon, a colossal statue recovered from the nearby Tempio di Giove. Before returning to your hotel, you’ll get the chance to walk among 1,000-year-old olive trees and other Mediterranean flora which blossom around this ancient site.
