About Salt and Sill (nr Gothenburg)
Originally a small seafood restaurant, Salt & Sill's owners served seafood straight from the harbours fishing boats during summer. Guests of this hugely popular restaurant would gorge on delicious herring dishes washed down with a few glugs of Swedish schnapps late into the night. Soon after, the family owners decided to build a space in which their diners could rest after such a sumptuous meal, and so Sweden's first floating hotel was born.
Drifting over the waves of Sweden's west coast amid a scattering of granite islands, the hotel has six two-storey houses built upon floating pontoons. There are 22 rooms on board with interiors displaying a modern Scandinavian style; each has a balcony or outdoor deck and the large rooftop verandas boast the best views overlooking Bohuslän's outer archipelago. For those in search of a little more luxury, there is just one suite in the hotel featuring a private rooftop Jacuzzi.
Food is unsurprisingly delicious and focuses purely on local and seasonal produce, specialising in the Swedish favourite, Herring; half of all Sweden's herring comes from Klädesholmen's working harbour. When dining at the restaurant, located on dry land, we recommend the Snapas starter where three different types of herring come served with three accompanying schnapps. Follow your meal with a refreshing sundowner at the adjacent boathouse lounge.
Salt & Sill are the proud owners of the World's fastest floating sauna; rent it out for the day and take to the seas. For a truly Scandinavian experience, brave a dip in the refreshing North Sea waters then warm up inside the sauna. Refreshed and rejuvenated, spend your evening in the idyllic surrounds of the archipelago indulging in a private dinner for two before settling down for a peaceful night's sleep beneath the stars.
