The Swedish city on mainland Europe’s doorstep
Think Sweden and you’ll probably conjure up pictures of the northern climes of busy Stockholm or the icy wilderness of Lapland. And yet Malmö offers a way to experience all the attractions of Sweden, and its enviable way of life, close to the European mainland.
Malmö is Sweden’s small and friendly third city. It’s no more than a short, thrilling drive from Copenhagen, over the spectacular Öresund Bridge, which links Denmark with southern Sweden.
Your Malmö adventure can include a visit to the vibrant open market in the square at Möllevångstorget. This is just one of the neighbourhoods that has developed a cosmopolitan culture of restaurants, cafes and nightlife. You can enjoy a performance at the Opera house or visit Malmö’s celebrated outpost of the Moderna Museet modern art gallery. This cultural institution is attractively housed in Malmohus Castle, along with the City Museum, Natural History Museum and Maritime Museum. Once you have browsed the art and history exhibitions in Scandinavia’s oldest Renaissance castle, it’s just a brief stroll from the hip new district of Västra Hamnen – the first place in Europe to claim to be carbon neutral.
