Situated on the banks of the Musi river, Hyderabad was once governed by the Nizams of India. During the period of Nizam rule, Hyderabad became the richest state in the country and nowhere is this legacy more apparent than the Taj Falaknuma Palace. The neo-Palladian home of Hyderabad’s former ruler, the Taj Falaknuma is now a magnificent hotel. It took over 10 years to restore this palatial 13-hectare estate to its former glory and re-establish it as an outstanding example of Nizami architecture.
The Golconda Fort is not to be missed. Built on a hill of granite and surrounded by massive battlements, this imposing citadel complex dates back over 800 years. The area is also known for the mines that have yielded some of the world's most famous gems, including the Hope Diamond. Nearby, the Qutub Shahi tombs are amongst the oldest monuments in Hyderabad and stand in memory of the departed kings of Golconda.
