Relax on the palm-fringed beaches of Tangalle
Tangalle is a dream of a tropical beach destination. Turquoise waters lap against long stretches of soft, white sand, framed by a backdrop of green palm trees.
Situated in the south of Sri Lanka, the area is known for its beautiful coast and calm waters. This is the ideal place to wind down and relax. The thriving fishing port offers you the chance to gaze idly as nets are mended and boats come and go, and further along the coast you can see the stilt fishermen who precariously perch in the water on wooden poles. If you are brave enough you can join them and test your own balance.
If you want to take a break from the beach we think an excursion to Mulkirigala Rock Temple is the perfect answer. Dating back to the 2nd century BC, the temple has been carved around a series of natural caves. Inside you’ll discover hundreds of statues of Buddha as well as some beautiful wall paintings.
Just east of Tangalle is Rekawa Beach, one of the most important sites for nesting turtle. As many as five different species lay their eggs in the sand and the best time to see them is between January and April.
