Follow the flow of the meandering Nile River from the sky as it leads you to one of the most famous temples in Egypt – Abu Simbel. Enjoy a spectacular bird’s-eye view of the colossal rock temples which lies on the western bank of Lake Nasser as you make the 40-minute flight from Aswan.
Your early arrival at the Great Sun Temple will ensure you enjoy easy access to the monument during the coolest part of the day. Join A&K’s Egyptologist to hear how the two temples were relocated, piece by piece, in 1968 to make way for the waters of the Aswan High Dam. You’ll have plenty of time to stroll around the UNESCO world heritage site, built by the Great Ramesses II, Egypt's longest ruling pharaoh. Explore the Great Temple of Ra-Harakhte, fronted by the four colossal statues of Ramesses II and the Temple of Hathor, dedicated to his favourite wife, Queen Nefertari. Learn how the temple was re-discovered in 1813 after being buried in the sand for centuries.
The monument may now be a familiar sight for film lovers as it was used in Raiders of the Lost Arc. Abu Simbel is a photographers’ dream so take your camera to capture this iconic sight. Enjoy the mesmerising sight below of the thin strip of green hugging the banks of the blue waters of the Nile.
