Hop on board the Alaska Railroad’s Coastal Classic train and head to the only place in the state where you can kayak around icebergs and raft past glaciers in the same day.
Enjoy the scenic train journey as you travel deep into Alaska’s backcountry, winding past soaring mountains and dense forests to the Spencer Glacier Whistle Stop. In this beautiful region, you will view some stunning natural scenes from out on the water.
On remote Spencer Lake, kayak peacefully across calm glassy waters, weaving through glacial ice, paddling around impressive blue-tinged icebergs and gliding up close to the glacier’s face.
After restoring your energy levels with lunch, it’s onwards to Placer River, where a seven-mile rafting adventure awaits. Your guide will steer the raft, so you can relax as you float down the river, gazing up at the majestic mountains and glaciers, and keeping an eye out for wildlife on the riverbanks. The final part of the adventure is returning to Portage on the Glacier Discovery train.
