Where surfers delight, dolphin play and craft beer is king
San Diego holidays have plenty to offer luxury seekers, beach lovers and wildlife enthusiasts. The county is the epitome of laid-back surfer chic, and an ideal destination for families, couples and groups. Situated on the border with Mexico, this is about as southern as Southern California gets. The Mediterranean climate coupled with some of the region’s best beaches make it a year-round draw, but you’ll also love the village-like communities and waterfront wildlife here.
Known as the birthplace of California, San Diego city is one of the state’s most beloved destinations. It’s home to over 150 breweries, promising craft beer as good as the surf. Spend time exploring the Gaslamp Quarter and its tempting eateries, wave hello to creatures great and small at San Diego Zoo, or spot dolphin and whale on a marine safari. With 11 kilometres of coastline, San Diego’s affluent community La Jolla offers sun, sea, sand – and superb shopping. For a spot of diving, head for La Jolla Cove, or for family-friendly fun, La Jolla Shores Park has you covered.
The county’s other cities boast their share of attractions. Coronado has San Diego Bay to the left of it, the Pacific Ocean to the right – a pleasant place to be stuck in the middle. Its peaceful, powder-soft beach will leave you feeling like you’re in a secluded island village, rather than just over the water from America’s eighth largest city. Carlsbad, known as ‘the village by the sea’, is a wealthy resort town to the north of San Diego. Here you can gaze across 20 hectares of meticulously arranged hilltop wildflowers – called the Flower Fields – to the ocean beyond.
