Floating on an ice lake watching the spectacular colours of the aurora borealis dancing overhead is sure to be one of the many highlights from your visit to Finnish Lapland.
This ethereal experience of seeing the Northern Lights takes place on a shimmering lake fringed with Christmas pines away from any light pollution. The frozen waters lie in the heart of Taiga Forest near Rovaniemi, considered the official residence for Santa Claus himself.
You will be transferred from your hotel and travel through the forest of birch, spruce, and scented pine trees to the lake. After being kitted out with arctic wet suits you are free to lie on the glistening ice and look towards the scattering of stars in the inky black night sky.
This remote location maximises the effect of the world’s greatest light show when it sweeps across the horizon towards the border with Norway.
Following your ice floating experience, enjoy a mug of steaming hot chocolate and biscuits. As you return to your hotel you will travel back through this mystical frozen forest that stretches from the shores of the North Atlantic, across Scandinavia through Russia to the Pacific.
Additional notes about the tour
Please note; as the Northern lights are a natural phenomenon there is no guarantee you will see them, but the experience of ice floating while looking into the night sky is always exhilarating.
The ice floating experience operates in the winter months from October – April.
Don’t forget your video and camera equipment to capture this natural wonder.
Afterwards enjoy a steaming mug of hot chocolate and ginger biscuits.
Children need to be over 150cm in height, due to the size of the wet suits.
