Visiting Argentina in January
The height of Argentina’s summertime, January is when visitors will experience the warmest weather – particularly in the country’s northernmost reaches.
On the northern coast, Puerto Madryn is a great summer destination, home to the two largest continental colonies of Magellanic penguin in the world.
In the south, summer days in Ushuaia are long with nearly 18 hours of sunlight.
Visiting Argentina in February
In February, the warm summer weather continues across Argentina. This is when the climate in the south is at its most pleasant, though generally cooler than the tropical north. It’s a great time to discover the peaks of the Andes, the Antarctic regions and the wildlands of Patagonia. Beach break hotspots in Argentina include Punta del Este and José Ignacio.
Visiting Argentina in March
In Mendoza, the wine harvest is in full swing, and you can even lend a hand at some of the working wine estates. Photographers and lovers of natural beauty will experience untold thrills in Patagonia, the Lake District or Tierra del Fuego as burning colours take hold of the scenery. With plenty of warm weather around, enjoy better rates from breaks in Buenos Aires, El Calafate and El Chalten.
Head to Mendoza for the Fiesta Nacional de la Vendimia to experience the annual celebrations of the grape harvest and sample some excellent wine varieties.
Visiting Argentina in April
Temperatures begin to cool, but all regions remain open to visitors. Late autumn is an incredibly beautiful time for hiking, horse riding and other outdoor activities in the Ibera Wetlands. As trees lose their leaves, bird watchers can improve their sightings of the many species which exist across the country’s tropical and subtropical habitats.
Music lovers can visit Mendoza for the Classical Music for the Wine Roads Festival, where the admission fee is a food-bank donation. Consisting of four days of concerts, this show well deserves its international reputation.
Visiting Argentina in May
May is the last month of autumn in Argentina. You’ll find the best weather in the rainforest regions of the north and around Iguazu Falls, where the climate is mild and the attractions relatively crowd free. You can also explore the historic destinations of Salta and Jujuy, home to the country’s oldest sites, or see the whales which gather near Puerto Madryn to breed.
Iguazu in Concert is a fantastic international music festival purely for kids.
ArteBA, held mid-May, is a landmark arts festival in Buenos Aires and well worth a visit.
Visiting Argentina in June
This is the month of the Gauchos of Güemes Parade in Salta, where authentically dressed Argentine cowboys take over the streets for a day. It´s the perfect month to visit the northwest which offers clear skies, pleasant daytime temperatures and cooler nights.
Winter is setting in, creating beautiful snowy scenes throughout the southern and mountainous regions. However, you can still visit most of the country without any difficulty at this time of year and enjoy a range of exciting experiences.
In Ushuaia, the furthest tip of South America, the locals celebrate the ‘longest night in the world’ with a variety of cultural activities.
Visiting Argentina in July
The first month of Argentina’s ski season, this is the time to head up to the scenic ski resorts of the Andes mountain range. Buenos Aires is relatively mild in July for accessing the city’s attractions and historic sites. You can also experience a range of outdoor activities in La Cumbre near Salta.
At the National Snow Festival in Bariloche, watch exciting ski competitions as well as an array of entertainment including aerobatic displays, logging and fabric competitions, electing a festival queen, and much more.
Visiting Argentina in August
August is a good skiing month, as well as a wonderful time of year to observe the whales which migrate past the city of Puerto Madryn. The climate is ideal for city breaks, hiking destinations and other active experiences, particularly in the north where it is likely to be warm and relatively dry.
This also a great month for uniquely Argentine experiences such as the World Tango Championship held in Buenos Aires. At this world-renowned event you can watch dancing partners from around the world compete.
Visiting Argentina in September
While you can still ski in the south, the rest of the country is experiencing a bright and beautiful spring. Blooming wildflowers bring lively colours to the bleak winter landscapes of the Lake District and Patagonia.
In Puerto Madryn, you can visit huge colonies of penguin. Wildlife watchers can also enjoy perfect weather for exploring Iguazu Falls, home to caiman crocodile and a wide variety of birdlife.
Visiting Argentina in October
The temperatures are creeping up throughout the country, making October a good month to get active outside before the full heat of summer. Explore the remote towns in the foothills of the Andes from Salta and capture stunning photos of one of the country’s most colourful seasons.
The jacaranda trees bloom in spring and sprinkle their petals across the ground, turning Buenos Aires lilac.
Visiting Argentina in November
November is a warm month, perfect for many destinations and holiday types. El Calafate, a remote town to the south of Argentina’s Lake District, is a great base for exploring the astonishing Glaciar Perito Moreno and the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape. You can also head to Peninsula Valdes to observe the largest colonies of elephant seal on the planet.
In San Antonio de Areco, witness the Día de la Tradición – a fabulous fiesta full of gaucho food and attire.
Visiting Argentina in December
The perfect escape from a miserable winter, December in Argentina is a month of baking sun. Even in the southern reaches, temperatures are reliably comfortable. This is the best time to visit the weather-beaten islands of Tierra del Fuego or to explore the high-altitude towns of the Andes. The wilderness of Patagonia is also open to explorers.
