Explore one of the world’s great lost cities
High on the list of places you have to see in your lifetime is the Rose Red City of Petra. Holidays in Jordan feature it as the highlight of the trip and it’s often described as the eighth wonder of the ancient world. Petra is somewhere that simply has to be seen in person to be believed.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this remarkable city of temples and houses was carved out of the sheer rock some 2,000 years ago by a nomadic people called the Nabataeans. From this stone stronghold, they were able to control the ancient trade routes of Arabia, establishing a kingdom that became known for its exquisite architecture and refined culture. Perhaps more surprising still, the city was lost to the Western world for 300 years and was only rediscovered by the Swiss explorer Johann Burckhardt in 1812.
On our Petra tour you’ll feel like you’re discovering it all over again, making your way on foot through a slim fissure in the rock of the Siq mountains to see the Royal Tombs and Roman City. You can even climb the 1,200 steps to the Monastery. Our guides will bring your visit to life too, offering real insight into Petra and the inner workings of Jordan's tribal community. They know every hidden secret of Petra. Many come from leading local Bedouin tribes and are graduates of the School of Arabian Tradition and Bedouin Culture.
